"We wanted to help Tripoli get back up on its feet and attract people to visit but we knew that if someone discovered Tripoli all by themselves, they wouldn’t be able to find the souks, hammams, or any other place easily!"⠀ ⠀ Ibrahim is a student nurse living in Tripoli, Lebanon. He volunteers with several local organisations working in deprived and marginalised areas of the city and joined us with our partners in Lebanon, utopialebanon to map his local area.⠀ ⠀ We trained young people of Tripoli to use googlemaps to map their neighbourhood. Mapping is a great way to empower young people to actively participate as citizens in their community and to promote tourism in their local area.⠀ ⠀ The UTOPIA project is funded by the Lebanon Humanitarian Fund manager by OCHA.⠀ ⠀ #mapping #googlemaps #lebanon #tripoli #volunteers #youthquake #youthempowerment #socialinclusion #citizenship #tourism

#FlashBackFriday It was an honour to speak alongside a great cast of presenters at Human Rights Development Trinidad and Tobago workshop on ‘Inclusivity for Development’ last Saturday on the occasion of Human Rights Day. It’s refreshing to have spaces where we can move the much-needed conversation on human rights in T&T forward, and HRDTT must be commended for living up to the theme for their event by having such a diverse line up of presenters who brought their unique and diverse perspective to the conversation. So much that was said during the workshop was of great value but some of my favourite talking points of the day included: Dr. Nixon’s important point that our local advocacy should be grounded in Caribbean theories, evidence and analysis; His Excellency, the High Commissioner of Australia to Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. Pilbeam, pointing to Australia’s recent triumph for LGBT rights with their same sex marriage referendum to illustrate that oftentimes the average man and woman on the street take progressive positions on issues politicians struggle for years to reach a consensus on and the Chief Justice, The honourable Mr. Justice Ivor Archie poignantly revisiting a point I’ve heard made about our watchwords - “I actually think that we need to revisit our national watchwords and move from ‘tolerance’ towards ‘acceptance’ because we are perfectly capable of tolerating that which we secretly or even openly despise.” It was a pleasure to bring folks into my professional world by presenting on the importance of holding the media accountable online, the usefulness of professional Social Media Accounts as conduits for both learning and educating and the necessity for online collaboration for the amplification of messages of inclusion #HumanRights #HumanRightsDay #workshop #publicspeaking #presentation #socialmedia #socialinclusion #diversity #development

Phoenix Forest School is delighted to have been given the opportunity, through generous funding from the The Heritage Council, to work with Traveller youth over the past 7 weeks. The Traveller community were explicitly recognised as a distinct ethnic group within the Irish nation on March 1st, 2017, after more than 30 years of lobbying. Pavee Point, an organisation aimed at improving the quality of life and living circumstances of Irish Travellers, maintains that, “The challenge of respecting, protecting and fulfilling Travellers’ human rights will continue, but this milestone of ethnic recognition provides an important platform to build momentum for realising Travellers rights”. Racism and discrimination is an explicit part of the economic, social, political and cultural exclusion experienced by Travellers in Ireland. And while no one can say that one child deserves this kind of experience MORE than another, it is clear that Traveller children do not have the same access to youth services as the rest of the Irish population. The benefits of spending time outside in nature are well known, and in this context can include the opportunity to spend time with friends and reduce social isolation/ marginalisation, develop skills, be acknowledged for themselves and not stereotyped by their status (Traveller), positively celebrate their Traveller identity and culture, have a break from family responsibilities and have the opportunity to simply enjoy fun activities. At the end of the session today, I asked the young boys to write, with charcoal made on the fire, what they enjoyed about being in the woods. I was left with this simple but powerful message: ‘Being here’. Many thanks to all those who advised and assisted me on this project. x #forestschool #travellerethnicity #ireland #socialinclusion #equalrights #socialforestschool #socialforestry #travellerculture
