Today I had a student ask me about safely getting into an LShape handstand prep position without injury, specifically back pain flare up. My main tips are these: • Work to eliminate fear. Fear will make you tense up. Take some deep breaths and know that you are safe. The wall and floor are solid and supporting you. • Make sure your wrists and shoulders are warmed up before you practice. In public classes I only throw in inversion work toward the end of class. • Root down through your palms and finger tips. Your hands are now your "feet"! Walk you feet up the wall to hip height. • Press the soles of your feet firmly against the wall. As you feel more comfortable you can work on bringing your heels away and using just your toes, but start with your feet flat and your leg muscles engaged. • Arms straight + legs straight + back straight. All about that alignment. • Core engaged! Draw your navel to your spine. • Glutes fired up! Squeeze your glutes. • Core + glute engagement will help protect your low back. • Breathe and listen to your body. If you feel pain or pinching in your back, come out and take a gentle stretch that feels good. Try again another time. You've got this. ✌🦋 #staygolddoyoga
