Pollock described this use of household paints, instead of artist's paints, as "a natural growth out of a need". He used hardened brushes, sticks, and even basting syringes as paint applicators. Pollock's technique of pouring and dripping paint is thought to be one of the origins of the term action painting. With this technique, Pollock was able to achieve a more immediate means of creating art, the paint now literally flowing from his chosen tool onto the canvas. By defying the convention of painting on an upright surface, he added a new dimension by being able to view and apply paint to his canvases from all directions. Pollack had a volatile personality, and struggled with alcoholism for most of his life. In 1945, he married the artist Lee Krasner, who became an important influence on his career and on his legacy. Jackson Pollock: Autumn Rhythm (Number 30). “It restates the negativeness of the universe. The hideous lonely emptiness of existence. Nothingness. The predicament of Man forced to live in a barren, Godless eternity like a tiny flame flickering in an immense void with nothing but waste, horror and degradation, forming a useless bleak straitjacket in a black absurd cosmos.” - Museum Girl

Pairing art and nature ~~~~~ Art to me is many things, whether telling a story, demonstrating a new way of seeing, portraying a different point of view, reminding us of an event in our lives or maybe reflecting our environment at a particular point in time. Jackson Pollock painted ‘Composition No 16’ in 1948, during his drip period. A proponent of the ‘all-over’ painting style, Pollock stated ‘’With the canvas on the floor I can walk around it, work from the four sides and literally be in the painting......’’.* By working on a horizontal surface, the line’s form is guided not only by the hand but by the physical movement of the artist’s entire body as he moves from one side to another, rather like the multi-directional swell of wild water on the lake these past few days. Naturally embossed, textural detail provides depth against the night blue background and, just as Jackson becomes a part of his creation, so the wind becomes part of the dark, menacing body of blue, flecked with white waves and aureate highlights when the sun makes its intermittent appearances. Art reflects nature and both lake and canvas are complexly beautiful. ~~~~~ ‘Composition No 16’ (1948) Jackson Pollock Oil on canvas, mounted on board Museum Frieder Burda, Baden-Baden *As described in Robert Motherwell’s ‘Possibilities’ magazine 🔹🔸▫️🌊▫️🔸🔹 Recently displayed at the ‘10 Americans: After Paul Klee’ exhibition at the Zentrum Paul Klee, Bern, Switzerland.
