There are 3 units in the John Day National Monument and this is the Blue Basin within the Sheep Rock Unit. This area is unique due to the green hued volcanic ash caused by the mineral, celadonite. There are 2 trails to choose from within Blue Basin, the easy 1.3 mile Island in Time trail or the longer, 3.25 mile Overlook Trail. We did the shorter of the 2 trails because we had time constraints. If you are planning a trip to the Painted Hills, I recommend visiting this area. It's about a 43 mile drive away but it's more than worth it and there are more incredible rock formations along the road. . Hike Length: 1.3 miles Elevation Gain: 305' Dogs Allowed: yes Fees: none Distance from Portland: 4 hrs 25 minutes

Still daydreaming about yesterday.

March 19th Today marks one year since my first chasingsunrise Sunday school. The beginning of a wild year or adventures, growth and love. A year ago today was when I met my tribe. It was a spontaneous Saturday night decision to wake up at an ungodly hour Sunday morning and spend the day chasing winter at Joffre Lakes with a bunch of strangers. Since then, I never looked back. I’ve been on adventurers I never imagined myself even considering. I’ve learned so much from people older, and younger (cough cough sofia) than me, and I have connected with people in a way I never thought I could. I’ve been inspired over and over again by my tribe, people I love like family and are always stoked to send it on the wildest adventures, eager to send it into the coldest water and unafraid to send it way beyond their comfort zone. From coffee at 3am in trailhead parking lots with hours of hiking ahead of us, to tacos at 3am in Oregon with hours of driving head of us, I’ve come to realize I love the not so picture perfect moments almost as much as I love watching the sunrise light up Yosemite valley, sending backflips into crystal blue waters, and twirling in a snowstorm in my prom dress. I wish I was good enough at writing to capture everything that the chasingsunrise tribe and the chasingsunrise spirit means to me, but there’s some things in life that just can’t be captured in words, and this is one of them.
