The sky was breathtaking tonight in Quartzsite. It almost made up for the fact that the Xscapers Convergence Bash 2018 ended last night here in Q. Today was Back and Bi day 💪🏼 Who else trained back on a Friday to go into the weekend strong? 🙋🏻‍♀️ It got me thinking though about a bicep curl form that I see a lot, and I’d like to address it! A bicep curl is a bicep isolation exercise - not a full ARM exercise. But if you do it the wrong way, you can end up using alllll the wrong muscles. Check out these two videos: in the first I’m doing a curl with good technique in the second I’m using bad technique (y’all are lucky I even did these because I have a bad shoulder and I was scared to do too many 😜). Here are some things to notice: 🔹Body position. In the first I’m standing upright with my glutes engaged and shoulders back and down. In the second, I’m leaning forward and have my shoulders rounded up and in. The latter posture automatically tense up my delts and traps, setting them up right away to take the bulk of the movement. Can you see how hard they’re working in the second video?? And then the delts and tris do the work to lower the weight🔹 Arm extension. Not sure why, but I see lots of people not lowering their arms all the way down. Maybe they’re lacking mobility, or maybe the weight is too heavy. Either way, by not completely lowering your arms you’re cheating yourself out of 1/3 of the movement! You might be getting a nice peak, but if you don’t go all the way down, over time you could end up with disproportion looking biceps. No bueno, amigos. 🔹Momentum. Alright, for the last couple reps of a hard set, sure, using momentum has its place. But not for the whole set guys. Make those muscles WORK for their gains!! - - If you’re struggling with your form, here are some ideas for ways to fix it: 🔹Use the preacher bench 🔹Do your curls with your back against a wall 🔹 Have a friend put their hands on your elbows as a queue to keep them still 🔹Try just squeezing your biceps without any weight in them. What happens? They curl in. That’s the contraction you want during a bicep curl!! 🔹Lower the weight. Egos just get you injured 😉 - - Hope that helps! Have a great weekend everyone!
