Tree and Rain Forest Facts Trees renew our air supply by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. The amount of oxygen produced by an acre of trees per year equals the amount consumed by 18 people annually. One tree produces nearly 260 pounds of oxygen each year. One acre of trees removes up to 2.6 tons of carbon dioxide each year.Trees lower air temperature by evaporating water in their leaves.Tree roots stabilize soil and prevent erosion.Trees improve water quality by slowing and filtering rainwater, as well as protecting aquifers and watersheds.More than half of the world’s estimated 10 million species of plants, animals and insects live in the tropical rain forests. One-fifth of the world’s fresh water is in the Amazon Basin. One hectare (2.47 acres) may contain over 750 types of trees and 1500 species of higher plants. At least 80% of the developed world’s diet originated in the tropical rainforest. Throwback to 2003 ➡️ In response to the years of diligent work and protest of several topanga conservation groups: The Santa Monica Mountains Coalition for Alternatives to Toxics, TCB Roadside Committee, and the Topanga Creek Watershed Committee the State Parks announced that they would halt their plans to use herbicide to kill arundo in Lower Topanga. . Today, Monsanto is currently facing a lawsuit against their claims that its herbicides are proven safe and assert that the company has known about the dangers and hidden them from regulators and the public. The litigants cite an assortment of research studies indicating that the active ingredient in Monsanto’s herbicides, a chemical called glyphosate, can lead to NHL, cancer, and other ailments 🌿🌿The ongoing fight against the use of pesticides in our creek emphasize that local activism plays a crucial role in facilitating government regulation. Federal and State government enacts these regulations but the complex system our societies run on does not make implementation always successful. Local grassroots movements play a necessary role within regulation efforts, so remember to think globally and act locally! 🌿🌿 . . It makes me proud to know that our community efforts were able to halt the use of a pesticide that is now fully understood to deteriorate the health of both humans and the ecosystem. GO TOPANGA!💚
