How much sleep do you get a night? Did you know sleep deprivation is linked with increased risk of weight gain, obesity and type 2 diabetes? Many studies, population based and lab based, have shown that sleep and circadian rhythms play an important role in regulating blood glucose and neuroendocrine function (neurotransmitter and hormone signalling throughout the body). They suggest that chronic sleep loss, less than 6 hours total a night, alters our circadian rhythm and increases the release of growth hormone which messes with our appetite and hunger signals, hormones called leptin and ghrelin. We also have higher cortisol levels at night (not ideal, they should be low to help us sleep) as well as insulin resistance and high blood glucose levels. The lack of glucose in the cells, sleep loss and altered hunger signals means we often crave energy dense, often nutrient deficient foods, to keep our energy levels up. Can you relate? Late night, little sleep, maybe some coffee with two sugars and chocolate will get me through?? This is why it is recommended to achieve 8+ hours of sleep a night for optimal wellbeing.
