I noticed something pretty cool on Lux today! When I got him over 3 years ago and he was rising 4 years old, he had a decent size hard lump on his near foreleg. I don't have any photos from back then as my phone from then is long gone 😂 but it was about the size of an NZ $2 coin. I knew he had it before I got him but I never thought much of it as he was sound and it wasn't painful or seemed to bother him at all, plus he was a freebie so I couldn't really complain. A vet had a look at it and told me it was likely a sarcoid, and that removal is not a great idea as it can grow back even bigger and get quite aggressive, so best to just leave it if it wasn't causing any issues in the meantime. He told me if it started to grow and started to impact his life then things could get tricky as treatment is hit and miss, so I should just enjoy the days I had with him. It was upsetting to hear at the time as he was only young and it felt like the vet was saying his days were numbered, but maybe I was just being a little dramatic 😝 It's been a few years since then and the lump has quite honestly been at the back of our minds as I just got used to it being there. Something made me think of it today and I went to check it, and it's now pretty much a third of the size that it used to be! So we are very happy about that 😊 #horse #horses #horseriding #thoroughbred #equine #equestrian #ottb #ottbsofinstagram #horses_of_instagram #horsesofinstagram #ottbofinstagram #dressage #showjumping #eventing #greyhorse #projecthorse #thoroughbredsofinstagram #racetrackreject #spring #trot #canter #gallop #vet

Had my first parasitology lab today! This is a picture of the buccal capsule of the Strongylus vulgaris, more commonly known as the blood worm. It is a nematode commonly found in the caecum of horses. S. vulgaris has an inner and outer leaf crown, and 2 teeth. The larvae spend 3-4 months in the cranial mesenteric artery, before returning to the caecum. This migratory tract becomes inflamed, and thrombosis occurs. Check out my story to see what the cr. mesenteric artery looks like after migration of these bad boys! #vetmed #vetschool #veterinarian #vet #animalscience #animals #vetgram #medschool #med #uni #study #vetscience #l4l #f4f #parasites #parasitology #equine
